In 1998 Sister Maureen McMahon began the Loaves and Fishes ministry and the Center of Compassion. The Loaves and Fishes Ministry is sponsored by the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. We are located at 7 Market Street in Dover Plains, New York, where people in need have easy access to our services.
The main focus of the Center is to be of service and available to those in poverty, especially women and children. Our Services include a food pantry open 5 days a week, which is stocked through a grant from The Regional Food Bank of The Hudson Valley, the parishioners of our local churches, schools and other organizations.
The Hope Chest, our thrift store, helps provide needed clothing and household items to the people in need throughout our community. All proceeds from the Thrift Store go directly to funding the good works of The Loaves and Fishes Ministry through The Center of Compassion. All of the items in our thrift store are donated by the generosity of the good people and local businesses in our community.
Other services provided include: the Welcome Table, a free lunch available in the parish hall from the beginning of November until the end of April, for whoever wishes to join us. About 70 volunteers participate by delivering the meals to the home-bound, making soups, desserts, greeting and serving our guests, and making the sandwiches. We also provide a Thanksgiving meal delivered to our elderly home-bound, Christmas presents to families in cooperation with local parishes, hospitals, a small "Senior" group, and individuals. At Easter time, Tara's baskets (named for a young girl in the community who died of cancer) are delivered to about 3 dozen families with toiletries and hams included for the adults.
The RDC Loaves and Fishes Ministry relies on your generosity. Without your continued donations of funds, items and time, we would not be able to provide the services our community needs. As a non-profit, all donations may be tax deductible.
